Star Party

FREE event!

Though donations are appreciated and accepted by parking lot volunteers.

Throughout the evening members of the Boise Astronomical Society will have a variety of   high-powered viewing devices set up around the perimeter of the Frontier Point Nordic Lodge and Education Center parking lot.  Guests are encouraged to spend time at each scope, learning about the instrument and viewing objects such as stars, galaxies, meteors, the moon and planets in the night sky.  Amateur star-gazers are welcome to bring their scopes and set up in the parking lot, as well.

No reservations required.  This event is weather-dependent and could be cancelled if it is cloudy or raining.  Call 332-5190 for more information or to check for the event status.

11:15ish (dark): constellation tour with B.A.S. volunteers

Hints: Please bring a jacket or blanket-it cools off at night in the mountains.  Flashlights with red cellophane covering the bulb will help to keep your eyes from dilating.

A few of the scopes will be set up with special filters for viewing solar storms on the setting sun.  All of the lodge interior and exterior lights are turned off to provide optimal viewing of the night sky.  A speaker with the B.A.S. will conduct a "constellation tour" when it is fully dark (approximately 11:15pm) using a green laser pointer to outline various constellations, sharing folklore and mythology surrounding the various stars and planets.

Drivers will be directed by volunteers to turn their cars around before parking in the lot near Frontier Point Lodge, so that vehicles (and headlights) are pointed away from the scopes and the viewing areas.

Bring a date...your family...Scout troop...youth group...anyone interested in a fun outdoor adventure away from the valley "light pollution!"

Getting there:  Frontier Point Nordic Lodge and Education Center is ¼-mile past the entrance at Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, on the southwest corner of the Pioneer Road junction.  As drivers enter the resort, keep to the left and go through the main parking lot past the tubing hill, and into the overflow lot.  Again, volunteers will help direct drivers to park their cars (and headlights) facing away from the event site and scopes.

Lodging offer: Why drive home when you can stay on the mountain? The Pioneer Condominiums at Bogus Basin have a special discount with reservations for the night of June 28th when you mention the Star Party!
